Customized irrigation advice for farmers on sandy and loss soil

The majority (more than 95%) of Dutch farmers irrigate their crops based on experience and intuition instead of in a data-driven manner. This leads to unnecessary over- and under irrigation which results in productivity loss and in water usage which is too high. In this project Agurotech and Wageningen University & Research collaborated to share technology (soil moisture sensors) and crop- and soil models with Dutch farmers on sandy and loss soils.

This project was granted through a Program from the Dutch government to enable the spread of knowledge on water management for Dutch farmers in the Netherlands. In this project Agurotech and Wageningen University & Research, globally a leading agriculture university in the world, collaborated to achieve this goal. The project started by installing sensors in farmers' fields and providing them with an App that gave them real-time and specific irrigation advice. The project demonstrated to farmers that irrigation strategies depend heavily on farmers' unique situation, e.g. their soil type and crops, and local weather circumstances and variability in the soil. During a complete farming season 16 farmers used this technology to steer their decision making process and they followed the irrigation strategies as presented in the App. Check out the video that was made about this project.
